Trainer's Manual in Mediation

A Practical Guide for Community-Level Skill-Building Trainings in Afghanistan

This manual is the result of a collaboration between the German Development Service (DED) and the Afghan NGO Cooperation Center for Afghanistan (CCA) and meant to be a contribution to community-based peacebuilding efforts in Afghanistan. This manual is specially designed for skill-building trainings as a practical and hands-on guide on planning, implementing and evaluating trainings in mediation. That is, the training material presented here goes far beyond what is needed for mere awareness-raising or knowledge transfer about conflict, conflict resolution and mediation. Rather, this manual emphasizes basic to intermediate practical skills and tools that need to be taught in order to qualify the training participants to resolve local conflicts as a third party.

The manual is divided into two sections:

  • Section A THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL BACKGROUND elaborates in some depths on the theoretical concepts, in particular on (community-based) peacebuilding, conflict resolution and mediation.
  • Section B RESOURCE PACKAGE provides the training material from which basic to intermediate skillbuilding trainings in mediation can be created. The section is organized like a training course or a workshop.
