Since the Civil Peace Service was founded in 1999, around 1,500 international CPS professionals have worked in more than 60 countries. In 2019 around 330 CPS experts were deployed worldwide: about 110 in Africa, about 60 in Latin America and Asia, about 60 in the Middle East and about 40 in Europe. Around 350 international CPS experts are currently active in 45 countries (as of 30 June 2021).

CPS experts are locally deployed for several years on the basis of the German Development Workers Act (Entwicklungshelfergesetz, EhfG).

The state and civil society work together in the Civil Peace Service. The CPS is run by nine German peace and development organisations in cooperation with local partner organisations. The CPS is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. 

In 2018, the Civil Peace Service budget was around 45 million euros. In 2019, 2020 and 2021, the CPS has 55 million euros at its disposal.
