Since the Civil Peace Service was founded in 1999, around 1.700 international CPS professionals have worked in more than 60 countries. In 2021 around 370 CPS experts were deployed worldwide: about 125 in Africa, about 70 in Latin America and Asia, about 65 in the Middle East and about 30 in Europe. Around 370 international CPS experts are currently active in about 45 countries (as of 30 September 2022).

CPS experts are locally deployed for several years on the basis of the German Development Workers Act (Entwicklungshelfergesetz, EhfG).

The state and civil society work together in the Civil Peace Service. The CPS is run by nine German peace and development organisations in cooperation with local partner organisations. The CPS is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. 

In 2023, the Civil Peace Service budget is around 60 million euros.
