Civil Peace Service facts and figures

The Civil Peace Service (CPS) is a programme that is financed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Between 1999 and 2009, it provided around 116.8 million Euros of funding for the work of the Civil Peace Service.

The work of the CPS is carried out by governmental and non-governmental executing agencies. They prepare the experts for their assignments and send them to their project placements.

Experts always work with local partner organisations or peace initiatives.
Since it was founded in 1999, the CPS has sent a total of 528 experts to 50 countries (as at 30/9/2009) to Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and the Balkans.

Currently, 199 Civil Peace Service experts are working in 50 countries, while 34 experts are at the stage of training (all figures as at 30/9/2009).

Decisions on the programme as a whole, as well as all CPS operations, are taken by the BMZ in consultation with the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
